Course Overview

Term Tabby Cats is a hands-on beginner course that is ideal for students looking to build confidence in a supportive and welcoming environment.

It is suitable for students in Years 1 – 2 who are new to public speaking. Rather than teaching abstract theory (which becomes more important as students develop), this program helps young students come out of their shell and form positive speaking habits. Through activities based learning, the students will practice basic skills like maintaining eye contact, projecting their voices, eliminating ‘um’s’ and other filler words, putting clear ideas together and thinking on their feet. These skills will stand them in good stead as progress in their school careers and in life.

We place a strong emphasis on creating a supportive and nurturing learning environment and strive to ensure each student’s introduction to presenting is a positive and enjoyable experience. Class sizes are kept small so that each student can be provided with maximum support and attention, including frequent individualised feedback from one of our experienced coaches.

Experience Levels

Our Term Tabby Cats course is a beginner class.

It is designed for students with little to no experience presenting in front of audiences. Both shy and confident students will flourish in this fun and welcoming environment as they learn and practice new skills!

Main Objectives

Over the course of the term, students will be exposed to:

  • a variety of speaking games and activities designed to make them feel more comfortable presenting to a class;
  • individual tasks and group work, focusing on presentation skills;
  • practical rather than theoretical coursework, which allows them to develop their presentation skills without relying on abstract reasoning (a skill that most students in this age group have not yet properly developed); and
  • a fun, positive and nurturing environment for them to develop their newfound skills with confidence.

Course Length

Each of our term programs runs from 7 – 10 weeks depending on the start date, the length of term and the requirements of our partner organisations – any differences in length have already been taken into account for that program’s pricing.

I’ve completed a Tabby Cats holiday program – is this right for me?

If your child has completed our Tabby Cats holiday program, we would recommend they still give our term program a go – there are a number of new ideas which they cover as part of the program.

Term Tigers consolidates and extends the skills the students learn in both the Holiday and Term Tabby Cats courses.

I’ve completed Term Tabby Cats – where to next?

If your child has completed our Term Tabby Cats course, we recommend that they do it one more time – this ensures that the concepts sink in, and gives them ample opportunity to develop their manner without having to worry about learning new theoretical content.  We make sure that the activities are substantially different, so students will still be engaged during their second term!

Once they’ve completed the program twice, we recommend that they progress to our Term Tigers course – further information about the Term Tigers program is available here!

Alternatively, your child may enjoy joining the Presentation Skills Tigers holiday program, or if they’re 7 years old, either the Speaking Camp Koalas holiday program.
