Course Overview

Term Debating Hummingbirds is the ideal course for students who are new to debating, or who have completed our Term Koalas Debating course.

While our younger students have learned some of the basics of debating, Hummingbirds students will learn new and important foundational content, which will prepare them to tackle a new kind of debating topic: policy debates.

Classes are kept small and all students will explore the introductory content they will need to participate in class and debate effectively. This course is a wonderful way to prepare students for some of the new speaking and analytical challenges they will be presented with in late primary and early high school.

Experience Levels

Our Term Debating Hummingbirds course is a beginners class designed for students with little to no experience with policy debates (i.e. topics that look at what we ‘should’ do).

Main Objectives

Over the course of the term, students will have the opportunity to:

  • learn core introductory theory about policy (‘should’) debates;
  • explore case development, argument structure and rebuttal strategies;
  • deploy what they have learned during in-class debates (at least 3 will be held each term);
  • practice different speaking roles and argue from both affirmative and negative sides of a debate; and
  • learn how to work effectively in a team environment

Course Length

Each of our term programs runs from 7 – 10 weeks depending on the start date, the length of term and the requirements of our partner organisations – any differences in length have already been taken into account for that program’s pricing.

I’ve completed a Debating Hummingbirds holiday program – is this right for me?

If your child has completed our Debating Hummingbirds holiday program, they will have covered most of the concepts in the term program – if they are feeling comfortable in their debating skills, we recommend they enrol in either Term Debating Hawks, or Term Public Speaking Hummingbirds.

I’ve completed Term Debating Hummingbirds – where to next?

If your child has completed our Term Debating Hummingbirds course, we recommend that they either progress to our Term Debating Hawks course (which changes every term), or try their hand at Term Public Speaking Hummingbirds

Alternatively, your child may enjoy joining the Debating Hawks holiday program (which changes every holiday), or perhaps give our Public Speaking Hummingbirds holiday program a try.
