Course Overview

Term Debating Koalas is a great way for a beginner student to take their first steps into the world of debating!

Debating is a unique skill that involves preparing cases as a team, developing robust arguments, thinking quickly on your feet and learning to rebut. Students will be introduced to several of the fundamental skills and principles of debating, and will also regularly put what they have learned in practice in class debates.

As with all our courses, classes are kept small so that all students have ample opportunity to receive individualised support and feedback from one of our experienced coaches.

Experience Levels

Our Term Debating Koalas course is a beginner class.

It is designed for students with little to no experience with debating, or even any experience presenting in front of audiences.  It is great for both confident and shy students.

Main Objectives

Over the course of the term, students will have the opportunity to:

  • learn a range of introductory concepts and principles focusing on the essential elements of debating, focusing on either ‘comparative’ or ‘value’ type debating topics;
  • gain lots of exposure to speaking activities, which will help them build confidence and develop good speaking habits and techniques; and
  • practice their budding skills in a supportive environment, alongside peers of a similar age and ability level.

Course Length

Each of our term programs runs from 7 – 10 weeks depending on the start date, the length of term and the requirements of our partner organisations – any differences in length have already been taken into account for that program’s pricing.

I’ve completed a Speaking Camp Koalas holiday program – is this right for me?

If your child has completed our Speaking Camp Koalas holiday program, we would recommend they enrol in either Term Debating Koalas, or Term Public Speaking Koalas – the focuses of all three programs are very different, and students will gain different skills from all three!

I’ve completed Term Debating Koalas – where to next?

If your child has completed our Term Debating Koalas course, we recommend that they do it one more time if possible – whilst the first term focuses on ‘comparative’ topics (e.g. that cats are better than dogs), the second term looks into the more complicated value topics (e.g. that celebrities are poor role models).  This helps ensure that the concepts sink in, and gives them ample opportunity to gain an understanding of a wider variety of topics.

Once they’ve completed both topic focuses, we recommend that they either progress to our Term Debating Kangaroos course or try their hand at Term Public Speaking Koalas

Alternatively, your child may enjoy joining the Speaking Camp Kanagaroos holiday program, or if they’re 9 years old, either the Hawks Public Speaking or Hummingbirds Debating holiday programs.
