Public speaking often feels scary – but it doesn’t need to be. This four day program (over eight sessions) aims to help late-primary students change the narrative in their minds, and turn public speaking from a source of fear into something they genuinely enjoy.
By giving students a head start on their public speaking and speech writing skills in a welcoming environment, this course lays strong foundations by assisting students develop an understanding of speech preparation alongside the development of a confident and engaging speaking manner.
As with all our online programs, class sizes are kept small (a maximum of 8) so that each student can be provided with maximum support and attention, including plenty of individualised feedback from our experienced coaches.
We genuinely believe that whilst our online programs look and feel a little different, they are just as effective in helping students develop their speaking abilities.
Unlike most providers, we run all our online programs live in small classes – nothing is pre-recorded, and everything happens in real time. This means that coaches are able to adapt their teaching style to the class that they actually have, leading to the best possible learning outcomes for students.
Students are also given just as many opportunities to practice in front of an audience – whilst not physically present, students can still see all their peers’ faces on the computer screen, providing them with an audience that feels (and is) very real. This means that students are still able to apply the theory they learn, develop their confidence, and crucially receive indvidualised feedback in real time.
All of our online holiday workshops run for eight sessions over four days, with each session being 1.5 hours long, and a good half hour break between the two sessions.
So, for example, if the program was scheduled for 9:30am to 1:00pm each day, the first session that day would be from 9:30am to 11:00am, with a half an hour break before the second session between 11:30am and 1:00pm.
Students won’t be starting at the screen all day either – they will get a short break in the middle of each session, and will be encouraged to prepare their practice speeches (at least one every session) on paper, as they would in a physical classroom setting.
Our Public Speaking Hummingbirds Online workshop is a beginner level program.
It is designed for students with little (or even no) public speaking experience at a late primary school level, and is perfect for shy and confident students alike!
For students who have previously completed ur programs, we would generally recommend that students give our Public Speaking Hummingbirds a try if:
That said, if your child has already completed either our Public Speaking Wallabies or Public Speaking Parrots, or alternatively has public speaking experience from another provider, they may be better off looking into our Debating Hummingbirds or Public Speaking Hawks programs.

Over the course of the workshop, students will be:
Connecting with Audiences
The first day will focus on both creating a supportive and welcoming class environment, as well as the connection that exists between speakers and their audience. Students will consider the importance of keeping audiences at the forefront when preparing speeches, and strategies that they can use to help engage them more effectively.
Developing Speech Ideas
As students progress, the focus will shift towards brainstorming ideas that they can craft into speeches. This involves coming up with opinions on various topics, which students are then required to back up through a range of different speaking activities using the online platform.
Forming Persuasive Speeches
Once students are comfortable devising ideas for their speeches, the next step is to turn those ideas into a coherent speech. Over the second and third days, students learn how to craft their reasons into arguments, as well as how to both grab and keep their audiences attention using effective introductions and conclusions. Each session focuses on a different concept, and includes multiple opportunities to practice in front of their peers.
On the fourth day, students will finalise and give their final presentations to the class, and parents are invited to sit in and watch. This is a great opportunity for students to present to a fuller audience, which not only helps them develop their confidence, but also represents an opportunity to showcase what they’ve learned.
Our classes vary in size every term depending on how many bookings we receive – however, the maximum size of our Public Speaking Hummingbirds Online class is around eight students with one coach.
