Course Overview

Debating is one of those skills that genuinely hard to master.  There is a lot happening in a debate – meeting burdens, keeping to a team strategy, tackling the other team’s arguments – and it takes lots of training and practice to really get your head around it all.

Our Experienced Debating Online program seeks to help students grapple with all these concepts and more.  Taking a student centric approach to learning, our coaches are given a wide repository of material, and are able to pick and choose which lessons and activities will best suit the students actually present before them in the classroom.  When combined with a number of practice debates on a range of different topics, students are able to start piecing together the enigmatic puzzle that is high school debating.

Importantly, we make sure that all classes are kept small, light hearted and non-competitive – we want to ensure that all students feel welcome and able to develop as a debater at their own pace.

As with all our online programs, class sizes are kept small (a maximum of 8) so that each student can be provided with maximum support and attention, including plenty of individualised feedback from our experienced coaches.

We genuinely believe that whilst our online programs look and feel a little different, they are just as effective in helping students develop their speaking abilities.

Unlike most providers, we run all our online programs live in small classes – nothing is pre-recorded, and everything happens in real time. This means that coaches are able to adapt their teaching style to the class that they actually have, leading to the best possible learning outcomes for students.

Students are also given just as many opportunities to practice in front of an audience – whilst not physically present, students can still see all their peers’ faces on the computer screen, providing them with an audience that feels (and is) very real.  This means that students are still able to apply the theory they learn, develop their confidence, and crucially receive indvidualised feedback in real time.

If you’re still not sure, check out our video on online programs or get in touch to learn more!

All of our online intensive programs run for eight sessions over four days, with each session being 1.5 hours long, and a good half an hour break between the two sessions.

So, for example, if the program was scheduled for 9:30am to 1:00pm each day, the first session that day would be from 9:30am to 11:00am, with a half an hour break before the second session between 11:30am and 1:00pm.

Students won’t be starting at the screen all day either – they will get a short break in the middle of each session, and will be encouraged to prepare their practice speeches (at least one every session) on paper, as they would in a physical classroom setting.

Our Experienced Debating workshop is an experienced level program.

Designed for students with formal coaching in debating, we recommend that students only enrol if:

  • they have completed our Foundations of Debating or Debating Hummingbirds holiday program (or have previously done the Experienced Debating or Debating Hawks program, and want to improve some other debating skills);
  • they have attended either our Debating Parrots or Debating Pelicans term program whilst in primary school;
  • they’ve received formal training with another provider; or
  • they attend a school with a comprehensive debating training program, and competed in a number of interschool debates.

Importantly, debating and public speaking are very different skills – attending a public speaking program with us, or participating in a public speaking program at school, doesn’t really prepare students for this workshop – they would be better off giving out Foundations of Debating program a try.

If you’re not sure whether your child would be better suited for our Foundations of Debating or Experienced Debating program, please get in touch and we would be more than happy to discuss it with you!

Over the duration of the program, students will:

  • be given various opportunities to present in practice debates, taking on different roles each time;
  • receive personal feedback from an experienced and enthusiastic coach, which can then be applied soon after in the following debate; and
  • have exposure to a range of important concepts, that will help them develop a more holistic understanding of debating.

Given the modular nature of the Experienced Debating Online program, there is no strict timetable that coaches are required to follow – that said, students can generally expect to:

  • participate in at least one debate per day, each on a different topic;
  • have time set aside for personal feedback which they can implement in the following practice debate; and
  • at least one theory session each day, focusing on a topic the coach believes will best benefit the group as a whole.

Students will also be exposed to a range of debating related activities.  These will help them develop their confidence and impromptu speaking skills, whilst at the same time ensuring that they have an enjoyable experience at the program!

Our classes vary in size every workshop depending on how many bookings we receive – however, the maximum size of our Experienced Debating Online class is around eight students with one coach.

If there aren’t any spots left, it’s usually because we’ve hit capacity – please get in touch with us and we’ll see what we can do about either opening an extra class, fitting your child into the existing class, or putting you on a waitlist in case any students pull out!

By the end of each program, students will have:

  • typed feedback, prepared individually for them by their coach, which goes through what they’ve improved on, and what still needs some work;
  • a digital certificate recognising their achievements;
  • a range of worksheets, which cover most of the theory covered over the course of the program;
  • each of the speeches they prepared for their practice debates; and
  • a more holistic understanding of debating!

Whilst we do try to keep classes relatively small, we are only able to run classes where 4 or more registrations have been received.

Course Reviews

My daughter had a great time and learnt her strengths, as well as what to improve on. She also learnt it's okay to be funny when she debates and to listen more to improve rebutting. A good camp for learning and fun!
