Course Overview

Cases, burdens, arguments, rebuttal, stakeholders – there is a lot going on in debating, and it can often be difficult to conceptualise it all at once.  This program aims to help students to tie all of the elements together.

Placing a strong focus on student centred learning, this program allows coaches to observe each of the students in their class using the online platform, determine what concepts will best help each student develop as a debater, and run classes that focus on those ideas.  This is then accompanied by a number of debates – with plenty of time allocated to personal feedback – to help provide students with a more holistic understanding of debating.

As with all our online programs, class sizes are kept small (a maximum of 8) so that each student can be provided with maximum support and attention, including plenty of individualised feedback from our experienced coaches.

We genuinely believe that whilst our online programs look and feel a little different, they are just as effective in helping students develop their speaking abilities.

Unlike most providers, we run all our online programs live in small classes – nothing is pre-recorded, and everything happens in real time. This means that coaches are able to adapt their teaching style to the class that they actually have, leading to the best possible learning outcomes for students.

Students are also given just as many opportunities to practice in front of an audience – whilst not physically present, students can still see all their peers’ faces on the computer screen, providing them with an audience that feels (and is) very real.  This means that students are still able to apply the theory they learn, develop their confidence, and crucially receive indvidualised feedback in real time.

All of our online intensive programs run for eight sessions over four days, with each session being 1.5 hours long, and a good half an hour break between the two sessions.

So, for example, if the program was scheduled for 9:30am to 1:00pm each day, the first session that day would be from 9:30am to 11:00am, with a half an hour break before the second session between 11:30am and 1:00pm.

Students won’t be starting at the screen all day either – they will get a short break in the middle of each session, and will be encouraged to prepare their practice speeches (at least one every session) on paper, as they would in a physical classroom setting.

Our Debating Hawks Online workshop is an experienced level program.

Designed for students with formal coaching in debating, we recommend that students only enrol if:

  • they have completed our Debating Hummingbirds holiday program (or have previously done the Debating Hawks program, and want to improve some other debating skills);
  • they have attended either our Debating Parrots or Debating Pelicans term program;
  • they’ve received formal training with another provider; or
  • they attend a school with a comprehensive debating training program, and competed in a number of interschool debates.

Importantly, debating and public speaking are very different skills – attending a public speaking program with us, or participating in a public speaking program at school, doesn’t really prepare students for this workshop – they would be better off giving out Debating Hummingbirds program a try.

Over the duration of the program, students will:

  • have multiple opportunities to practice their skills across a number of debates on different topics;
  • receive personal feedback from an experienced and enthusiastic coach, which can then be applied soon after in the following debate; and
  • have exposure to various concepts and ideas that will help them flourish as a debater and develop a more holistic understanding of the art.

Our Debating Hawks Online program is a modular program – this means that rather than prescribe what coaches will teach over a term, we instead give them a wide range of session that they are able to pick and choose from, depending on the skill level, experience and general preferences of the group that they are teaching.

That said, students will:

  • have the opportunity to revise the key concepts involved with ‘Policy’ debating at the beginning of the term, to ensure that everyone is on the same page;
  • cover a number of topics across a range of theory topics relevant to the students present in the class; and
  • participate in practice debates every day.

Our classes vary in size every workshop depending on how many bookings we receive – however, the maximum size of our Debating Hawks Online class is around eight students with one coach.

If there aren’t any spots left, it’s usually because we’ve hit capacity – please get in touch with us and we’ll see what we can do about either opening an extra class, fitting your child into the existing class, or putting you on a waitlist in case any students pull out!

By the end of each program, students will have:

  • typed feedback, prepared individually for them by their coach, which goes through what they’ve improved on, and what still needs some work;
  • a digital certificate recognising their achievements;
  • a range of worksheets, which cover most of the theory covered over the course of the program;
  • each of the speeches they prepared for their practice debates; and
  • a more holistic understanding of debating!
