Course Overview

This course is perfect for students in Years 1 – 2 who are new to public speaking. Rather than teaching abstract theory (which becomes more important as students develop, but is difficult for students of this age), this program helps young students come out of their shell and form positive speaking habits.  Utilising activity based, experiential learning, students will practice and develop basic skills, such as maintaining eye contact, projecting their voices, eliminating ‘um’s’ and other filler words, putting clear ideas together and thinking on their feet. These skills will stand them in good stead as progress in their school careers and in life.

We place a strong emphasis on creating a supportive and nurturing learning online classroom environment and strive to ensure each student’s introduction to presenting is a positive and enjoyable experience. Class sizes are kept small so that each student can be provided with maximum support and attention, including plenty of individualised feedback from our experienced coaches.

We genuinely believe that whilst our online programs look and feel a little different, they are just as effective in helping students develop their speaking abilities.

Unlike most providers, we run all our online programs live in small classes – nothing is pre-recorded, and everything happens in real time. This means that coaches are able to adapt their teaching style to the class that they actually have, leading to the best possible learning outcomes for students.

Students are also given just as many opportunities to practice in front of an audience – whilst not physically present, students can still see all their peers’ faces on the computer screen, providing them with an audience that feels (and is) very real.  This means that students are still able to apply the theory they learn, develop their confidence, and crucially receive indvidualised feedback in real time.

If you’re still not sure, check out our video on online programs or get in touch to learn more!

All of our online term programs run for a single 1.5 hour session per week, for a total of 10 weeks.

There is a short break in the middle of the session to help students concentrate for the full period, and in any event students won’t be starting at the screen the whole time either – they will be encouraged to prepare their practice speeches (at least one every session) on paper, as they would in a physical classroom setting.

Our Presentation Skills Leopards course is a beginner level program.

This course assumes no particular knowledge – students are more than welcome to join the program with little (or even no) public speaking experience.  We all have to start somewhere – and this is the perfect place to do so.

If your child has already done holiday programs with us – or has formal public speaking training from another source – they may get more out of our more advanced Presentation Skills Lions Online program.

Please get in touch if you’d like to discuss what’s best for your child!

After completing the Presentation Skills Leopards program, students should:

  • have participated in a number of activities (that feel like games) in a nurturing class environment, which help break down the stigma that public speaking is something to be feared;
  • understand the basic elements of a speech, including the three M’s and simple persuasive speech structure; and
  • have been given multiple opportunities to present to their class in each and every two-hour session.

Connecting with Audiences

The first few sessions are designed to help students get to know one another in the online environment, and feel comfortable in the classroom setting.  Amongst various speaking activities, students will be exposed to the concept of an audience, and come to understand that speeches are about finding a connection between their interests and their audience.

Developing Speech Ideas

As students progress, they will spend a couple of sessions working on forming their own opinions, and turning those opinions into speeches.  They will have multiple opportunities to share and justify those opinions to their class – all the while having fun with numerous speaking activities.

Forming Persuasive Speeches

From the mid-point of the term, students will start crafting speeches – starting with their speech bodies, before moving onto introductions and (if there is time) conclusions.  Each week will have a different focus, with the idea that students are able to build their speeches over time.

Parent Presentations

The term ends with a parent presentation – an opportunity for students to present to an adult audience through the online platform.  This is not only a great way to help them develop their confidence, but also represents an opportunity to showcase what they’ve learned.  Students generally spend the last couple of sessions preparing and practicing their speeches for the presentation.

Our classes vary in size every workshop depending on how many bookings we receive – however, the maximum size of our Leopards Online class is around six students with one coach.

If there aren’t any spots left, it’s usually because we’ve hit capacity – please get in touch with us and we’ll see what we can do about either opening an extra class, fitting your child into the existing class, or putting you on a waitlist in case any students pull out!

By the end of each program, students will have:

  • typed feedback, prepared individually for them by their coach, which goes through what they’ve improved on, and what still needs some work;
  • a digital certificate recognising their achievements;
  • a digital course booklet (that can be printed), which covers everything they’ve learned over the course of the program;
  • the speech that they prepared for their final presentations; and
  • hopefully a more positive perspective on public speaking!
Course Reviews

My daughter is an introvert girl. Her voice was so tiny when she did speech in her daily school. But we were so surprised, on the last day's presentation, she improved her public speaking skill, especially she has confident to speak loud in front of audience.

Initially I had slightly reservations as it was going to be an online program given the ongoing pandemic with COVID-19. However, I am pleased to have made the decision.

The structure of the program, the attention to detail and support provided to my daughter has been invaluable. In particular, I understand the teacher after the first lesson talked to her managers and arranged to give my six-year-old extra attention where required after the lesson. As a parent, that extra support to accommodate the pace and different needs of children is what helps reassure us and sets businesses in this industry apart. For the two times my daughter has participated in your programs, we have had very good experiences with Speaking Schools Australasia and I highly commend both the teachers!
