Course Overview

Term Public Speaking Hummingbirds is an introductory course for students in Years 5 – 6 who are relatively new to public speaking.

Students will be introduced to key theory that explains why we give speeches, how to structure them effectively, how to respond to topic stimuli and express clear opinions, and how to engage an audience. Throughout the term each student will have ample opportunities to explore how these theoretical underpinnings work in practice, and will refine their speaking manner and presentation skills during class activities and practice speeches.

As with all our programs, we make sure that every classroom environment is very supportive, and ensure the activities are lots of fun! This is the perfect course for both shy and outgoing students to begin their journey into the exciting (though initially also potentially nerve wracking) world of public speaking in a welcoming environment.

Experience Levels

Our Term Public Speaking Hummingbirds course is a beginners class designed for students with little to no public speaking experience.

Main Objectives

Over the course of the term, students will have the opportunity to:

  • learn core introductory theory, including how to prepare a speech with a strong introduction, body and conclusion;
  • present their opinions on a wide range of subjects and stimulus materials;
  • participate in lots speaking activities, which are designed to help them build confidence and refine their speaking manner (including eye contact, voice projection and stance); and
  • practice their speaking skills in a small class group with peers of a similar age and ability level.

Course Length

Each of our term programs runs from 7 – 10 weeks depending on the start date, the length of term and the requirements of our partner organisations – any differences in length have already been taken into account for that program’s pricing.

I’ve completed a Public Speaking Hummingbirds holiday program – is this right for me?

If your child has completed our Public Speaking Hummingbirds holiday program, we would recommend that they give our term program a go – whilst the theory is similar, the activities are predominantly different, and going through the term program with a good understanding of the content means that students are able to concentrate on and develop their manner.

Alternatively, if students feel confident in their ability, they are also welcome to join our Term Public Speaking Hawks or Term Debating Hawks programs!

I’ve completed Term Public Speaking Hummingbirds – where to next?

If your child has completed our Term Public Speaking Hummingbirds course, we recommend that they do it one more time – this ensures that the concepts sink in, and gives them ample opportunity to develop their manner without having to worry about learning new theoretical content. We make sure that the activities are substantially different, so students will still be engaged during their second term!

Once they’ve completed the program twice, we recommend that they either progress to our Term Public Speaking Hawks course, or try their hand at Term Debating Hummingbirds.

Alternatively, your child may enjoy joining the Public Speaking Hawks holiday program (which changes every holiday), or try their hand at our Debating Hummingbirds holiday program.
