Course Overview

Term Debating Hawks builds on the foundational knowledge developed in Term Debating Hummingbirds (or our Debating Hummingbirds holiday program) and helps students take their skills to the next level.

Debating topics for this course are mostly policy oriented (i.e. topics that look at what we ‘should’ do), and the approach to learning is hands on, which means that students will do debates in class most weeks. Throughout the term students will receive individualised feedback from their coaches and work towards enhancing the strength and sophistication of their arguments.

Classes are kept small, and start with a revision of the core content that they will need to participate effectively. This course is a wonderful way for students to take on some new speaking and analytical challenges, and continue to develop their skills necessary for thriving in late primary school.

Experience Levels

Our Term Debating Hawks course is designed for students who have had a reasonable amount of previous debating experience. Students must have either completed Term Debating Hummingbirds (or our Debating Hummingbirds holiday program), or received formal debating coaching as part of their school’s debating team.

Main Objectives

Our Term Debating Hawks is a modular program – rather than prescribe what coaches will teach over a term, we instead give them years worth of material that they can pick and choose from depending on the skill level, experience and general preferences of the group that they are teaching.

Over the course of the term, students will have the opportunity to:

  • revise key theory about policy (‘should’) debates and take their understanding to the next level;
  • received targeted individualised feedback and work towards individual goals;
  • deploy what they have learned during in-class debates (there will be practice debates most weeks of the term);
  • practice different speaking roles and argue from both affirmative and negative sides of a debate; and
  • learn how to work effectively in a team environment

Course Length

Each of our term programs runs from 7 – 10 weeks depending on the start date, the length of term and the requirements of our partner organisations – any differences in length have already been taken into account for that program’s pricing.

I’ve completed a Debating Hawks holiday program – is this right for me?

Both our Term Debating Hawks and Debating Hawks holiday program are modular programs – rather than prescribe what coaches will teach over a term, we instead give them years worth of material that they can pick and choose from depending on the skill level, experience and general preferences of the group that they are teaching.

This means that students can continue to do both over and over again, with no two programs ever being the same – practice makes perfect!

I’ve completed Term Debating Hawks – where to next?

Our Term Debating Hawks program is what we call a ‘modular program’ – instead of predetermining what students will be taught over a team, we instead give the coaches a much wider range of materials that they can pick and choose from depending on the skill level, experience and general preferences of the group that they are teaching.

Alternatively, your child may enjoy joining the Debating Hawks holiday program (which is also modular, and changes every holiday), or perhaps give our Public Speaking Hummingbirds holiday program a try.
