Course Overview

This three-day introductory course is for students with no experience in debating who want to see what it is all about. The course provides an overview of the basics of debating and allows students to experience their first debates in a welcoming environment as part of a small, likeminded group.

Given both the small number of primary schools that offer debating programs and the increasing number of high schools that only allow a select few to enter their debating teams, this course offers students a head-start on their peers by introducing them to the necessary skills and strategies and providing them with a supportive environment in which to practice.

As with all of our programs, class sizes are kept small to ensure that students have ample opportunity to practice their skills and to receive regular individualised feedback from one of our experienced coaches.

Experience Levels

Our Hummingbirds Debating course is a beginner program.

It is designed for students with little (or even no) experience presenting in front of audiences, and is perfect for shy and confident students alike!

If your child has some speaking experience and you’re not sure whether the Hummingbirds or Hawks (continuer) debating program is best for you, please get in touch and we’d be more than happy to discuss which is most appropriate for your child!

Main Objectives

After attending this course, students should:

  • understand the basic rules and roles involved in debating;
  • have developed an understanding of how to develop a case and brainstorm arguments as a team;
  • know the best strategies to use when delivering arguments and giving rebuttal; and
  • have engaged in various exercises and practice debates using topics derived from actual interschool debating competitions.

Should I repeat the Hummingbirds Debating program?

If your child has already had a go at our Hummingbirds Debating course, they should join our Hawks Debating group – you can find more information about the continuer Hawks Debating program here!

Can I do both the Public Speaking and Debating holiday programs?

Students are more than welcome to undertake both the Debating Hummingbirds and Public Speaking Hummingbirds holiday (and term) programs.

Whilst students are able to develop their confidence and speaking skills participating in either, both are very different skills, and are taught in different ways. Please get in touch if you’re interested in learning more about the differences between public speaking and debating!

What term program is best after Public Speaking Hummingbirds?

If your child has already had a go at our Public Speaking Hummingbirds holiday course, we would still recommend that they do our Term Hummingbirds Public Speaking or Term Hawks Debating programs –  the activities used in for both is very different to our holiday program, and students are bound to get plenty out of the course!
