Course Overview

Speaking Camp Koalas Online is a beginner level program, ideal for students with little (or even no) public speaking experience who want to develop their confidence.

The program provides an introduction to the necessary concepts involved with public speaking, placing particular focus on persuasive speeches.  It is a great way to help prepare students for the speaking tasks they will encounter in later primary school years and beyond!

As part of the program, students will be given the opportunity to present at least once every session in a fun and supportive environment.  Our experienced and passionate coaches ensure that all lessons are interactive experiences that put student centred and experiential learning front and centre.

As with all our online programs, everything is taught live and in-person, and class sizes are kept small (a maximum of 8) so that each student can be provided with maximum support and attention, including plenty of individualised feedback from our experienced coaches.

We genuinely believe that whilst our online programs look and feel a little different, they are just as effective in helping students develop their speaking abilities.

Unlike most providers, we run all our online programs live in small classes – nothing is pre-recorded, and everything happens in real time. This means that coaches are able to adapt their teaching style to the class that they actually have, leading to the best possible learning outcomes for students.

Students are also given just as many opportunities to practice in front of an audience – whilst not physically present, students can still see all their peers’ faces on the computer screen, providing them with an audience that feels (and is) very real.  This means that students are still able to apply the theory they learn, develop their confidence, and crucially receive indvidualised feedback in real time.

If you’re still not sure, check out our video on online programs or get in touch to learn more!

All of our online holiday workshops run for eight sessions over four days, with each session being 1.5 hours long, and a good half hour break between the two sessions.

So, for example, if the program was scheduled for 9:30am to 1:00pm each day, the first session that day would be from 9:30am to 11:00am, with a half an hour break before the second session between 11:30am and 1:00pm.

Students won’t be starting at the screen all day either – they will get a short break in the middle of each session, and will be encouraged to prepare their practice speeches (at least one every session) on paper, as they would in a physical classroom setting.

Our Speaking Camp Koalas workshop is a beginner level program.

In short, anyone who is in Years 3 or 4 who hasn’t received formal public speaking and debating coaching would benefit from undertaking this course.  The program is designed to cater to a wide range of ability and confidence levels.  Whether shy or outgoing, naturally talented or in need of some direction, students almost always come out of the program having learned something new, and feeling more confident in their speaking ability.

Crucial to this is the parent presentation, which for many students is their first opportunity to speak in front of a large audience primarily comprised of adults – we give them plenty of time to prepare and practice, and help them feel more resilient when presented with speaking opportunities.

That said, if your child has formal coaching in public speaking, they may be better suited in our more experienced Speaking Camp Kangaroos program – please get in touch if you’d like to discuss your personal circumstances in more depth!

Over the course of the workshop, students will have the opportunity to:

  • learn core introductory theory focusing on the essential elements of persuasive speeches;
  • gain lots of exposure to speaking activities, which will help them build confidence and develop good speaking habits and techniques; and
  • practice their budding skills in a supportive online environment, alongside peers of a similar age and ability level.

Connecting with Audiences

The first two sessions focus on relationships.  The program starts by creating strong relationships between the students, as well as the coach, in order to create a welcoming class atmosphere.  Students are then taken through the importance of connecting with their audiences, and how speeches essentially represent a relationship between the speaker and those listening to the presentation.

Developing Speech Ideas

As students progress into the second day, they will look at how their own opinions and experiences can supply the bedrock of a good speech.  Students will have various opportunities to share and justify their opinions as presentations to their peers, as well as receive plenty of individual feedback from their coaches to help them develop.

Forming Persuasive Speeches

On the third and fourth day, students will start crafting speeches – starting with their speech bodies, before moving onto introductions and conclusions.  Each week will have a different focus, with the idea that students are able to build their speeches over time.

Final Presentations

On the fourth day, students will finalise and give their final presentations to the class, and parents are invited to sit in and watch. This is a great opportunity for students to present to a fuller audience, which not only helps them develop their confidence, but also represents an opportunity to showcase what they’ve learned!

Our classes vary in size every term depending on how many bookings we receive – however, the maximum size of our Koalas Online class is around eight students with one coach.

If there aren’t any spots left, it’s usually because we’ve hit capacity – please get in touch with us and we’ll see what we can do about either opening an extra class, fitting your child into the existing class, or putting you on a waitlist in case any students pull out!

By the end of the workshop, students will have:

  • typed feedback, prepared individually for them by their coach, which goes through what they’ve improved on, and what still needs some work;
  • a digital certificate recognising their achievements;
  • a digital course booklet (that can be printed), which covers everything they’ve learned over the course of the program;
  • the speech that they prepared for their final presentations; and
  • in most cases a changed perspective on public speaking!

Enrolled my daughter for vacation speaking course. It was done online through an interactive process with teacher and other students. She enjoyed this, and has learnt a lot.

Its an exceptionally well run course. I wish I could have attended such a course when I was her age. It teaches invaluable life skills.
