9:30AM - 1:00PM
This workshop, which changes every holiday, helps students develop specific public speaking skills.
Over the July holidays, the focus will be on Impromptu Speeches.
Provide high school students with an opportunity to develop their skills in a novel public speaking setting.
Expose students to more advanced theory sessions that focus on a specific public speaking concept.
Give students plenty of opportunities to practice their speaking skills and receive feedback.
As students progress through high school, they’re likely to come across many challenges – one of which will undoubtably be public speaking. Each of these opportunities to present will come with a unique set of circumstances, and it’s important that students are across a range of different speaking styles to meet the trials they’re almost certain to face.
Our Experienced Public Speaking program seeks to help students not only meet those trials, but truly conquer them. This program changes every holiday, and places the focus on a different skill or type of public speaking. Whether it be impromptu speaking, mock trials or developing speaking manner, every program is a great opportunity for students to deepen their understanding of public speaking and build their confidence to take those challenges head on.
During the July holiday period, we will be providing a four day program which places the focus squarely on impromptu speeches.
Whilst touched upon in all our courses (including our beginner Foundations of Public Speaking program), impromptu speaking is a different skill to the type of prepared speeches that students are often taught. Rather than giving students the opportunity to consider their topic well in advance of delivering their presentation, impromptu speeches involve giving students only a few minutes (if any time at all) to give a talk on a randomly allocated topic.
Learning to think on your feet, not to mention speaking with confidence under pressure, is an invaluable skill that benefits students in school, work and their social lives. Impromptu speaking is one of the best ways to develop these skills.
We genuinely believe that whilst our online programs look and feel a little different, they are just as effective in helping students develop their speaking abilities.
Unlike most providers, we run all our online programs live in small classes – nothing is pre-recorded, and everything happens in real time. This means that coaches are able to adapt their teaching style to the class that they actually have, leading to the best possible learning outcomes for students.
Students are also given just as many opportunities to practice in front of an audience – whilst not physically present, students can still see all their peers’ faces on the computer screen, providing them with an audience that feels (and is) very real. This means that students are still able to apply the theory they learn, develop their confidence, and crucially receive indvidualised feedback in real time.
All of our online holiday workshops run for eight sessions over four days, with each session being 1.5 hours long, and a good half hour break between the two sessions.
So, for example, if the program was scheduled for 9:30am to 1:00pm each day, the first session that day would be from 9:30am to 11:00am, with a half an hour break before the second session between 11:30am and 1:00pm.
Students won’t be starting at the screen all day either – they will get a short break in the middle of each session, and will be encouraged to prepare their practice speeches (at least one every session) on paper, as they would in a physical classroom setting.
Our Experienced Public Speaking workshop is an experienced level program.
This program is meant for students with formal coaching in public speaking, rather than new students – we strongly recommend that students only enrol if:
Importantly, debating and public speaking are very different skills – attending a debating program, or participating in a debating program at school, doesn’t really prepare students for this workshop. They would be better off giving our Foundations of Public Speaking program a try.
If you’re not sure whether your child would be better suited for our Foundations of Public Speaking or Experienced Public Speaking program, please get in touch and we would be more than happy to discuss it with you!
This course seeks to assist students present solid impromptu speeches by:
Revision & Fundamentals
We kick off the first day with some ice breakers, and then a revision of the concepts covered in the Foundations of Public Speaking program. We then move onto the most common fundamental structure for impromptu speeches – the FAT method – and help students develop a range of concepts that they would be happy discussing as part of an unprepared speech. The day includes a number of different speaking activities that consolidate these ideas and apply this simple structure.
The second day takes students through a range of different structures they might use in addition to the traditional IBC and FAT methods, and provides them with ample opportunity to apply those structures in a range of different impromptu speeches.
On the third day, students are shown how to adapt stimuli to topics they’re comfortable talking about, and given a wide range of opportunities to practice their impromptu speaking using real-world topics commonly used in public speaking competitions.
On the fourth day, students will have a range of opportunities to apply the skills they’ve learned in the earlier sessions, and present multiple different impromptu speeches to their peers!
Our classes vary in size every term depending on how many bookings we receive – however, the maximum size of our Experienced Public Speaking Online class is around eight students with one coach.
If there aren’t any spots left, it’s usually because we’ve hit capacity – please get in touch with us and we’ll see what we can do about either opening an extra class, fitting your child into the existing class, or putting you on a waitlist in case any students pull out!
By the end of each program, students will have:
My daughter thought her coach was very engaging, explained things well, gave useful comments and there the right balance of fun games and learning.
She came away with more confidence and some good ideas for improvement.
My daughter enjoyed the structured approach to speech writing and the fun way to tackle the best delivery! We will definitely come back again!
